Shopping on a budget is something we all hate. I especially hate keeping to budgets. I’m bad at it, but over the years I’ve learned how to get the most for a buck. That is why I wanted to share some of my basic tips everyone should know.
Stock up on Basics Items: Before you go and find some cool interesting items for your wardrobe make sure your stocked up on well fitting T-shirts, jeans, tank tops, jackets, sweaters, the basics we all get bored with. This also means those items that are easily memorable or patterned items typically are not a good route because you don’t want to be remembered as “the person who always wears BLANK”. You want to have a strong capsule wardrobe before you get unique memorable pieces. Places to buy basics: prettylittlething, Old Navy, and Madewell.
Invest in Certain Items: Instead of buying cheap jeans, purses, jackets and ect, invest in items that will last you longer. This way you won’t have to buy it new every year. This is one of my biggest tips. You want the items that will last you years and in the long run will save you money. places to buy quality items at a discount: Nordstrom Rack and Saks off Fifth ave.
Find your Inspiration: Instead of going to the store and buying what you think you will like go on pinterest and find a style you love. Save some outfits with similar pieces and look for how other people wear those similar items. This will give you direction so when you get home you don’t just have random things. I make a list of all the essential items I want to add to my wardrobe and find those items before I “browse”. My pinterest account.
Have an Outfit in Mind: This is the biggest shopping tip my mother taught me! Never buy anything you don’t already know how to style. If you find a cute top and you already have in mind what you could wear it with (that you already own) then it’s a good buy. But if you find something you like but don’t know what you would wear with it, it’s a no go. You don’t want to have items in your closet you don’t know how to wear.
Go Thrifting: Thrifting has become so popular in the last couple years for many reasons. Buying second hand items is a great way to save a lot of money and get a lot of clothes. Although make sure you are buying things you will actually wear and are in good condition. Thrifting is also a great way to shop sustainably. Many not-for-profit thrift stores you can also sell your gently used clothes to. You can then use that money to get some new outfits.
Go to Outlet Stores: Outlet stores are a great way to find items at a lower price. If you look up outlet malls or stores near you will probably find many options. I love to buy my basic items from outlet stores like j.crew factory (they have the best T-shirts).
Accessorize: Accessories can make a basic outfit look interesting and fun. You can wear the same shirt and same jeans over and over again, but if you change up the accessories everyone will think it as a completely new and different outfit. Accessories are also a huge way to show personality, you can learn alot about someone from their style of jewelry. Baublebar is my favorite brand for costume jewelry
